Beauty is the Compass
“God gave each and every one of us a gift of beauty so that we would take care of ourselves. He never intended it to be used as a tool of manipulation or to place ourselves above Him. It was given to us so that we would care.”
Think of times you’ve been awed by beauty.
Have you experienced magical moments of nature, such as in a colorful sunset, or in the dance of sunlight on water?
Have you been moved by the melodies of music, leaves rustling in the wind, or by nature’s silence?
Or have you witnessed a piece of art that transformed a mundane scene into magical possibilities?
Whether you can count on one hand … or have lost count of the number of the times your soul has been stirred, each and every experience of beauty becomes part of who you are. As you experience beauty in the world, it becomes woven into the fabric of who you are today.
So, what does this have to do with our health?
Everything.
The most memorable experiences of beauty come from outside ourselves …
but the most long-lasting ones come from within.
And we can create more of them if we know how.
Here is how beauty and health are related.
Beauty is a feel good experience.
Health is a feel good experience.
And they go hand-in-hand.
Here’s how this works …
When we feel good, we want to protect and take care of that good feeling. We do this by nourishing our bodies and our relationships.
As we are nourished and reap the benefits of balanced eating and quality exercise, we have more feel good experiences … which leads us to feeling beautiful.
As we experience true health and feel beautiful as a result, we emit a glow of confidence that is undeniable and attractive to others.
So, although we are attracted to the world through beauty, what we’re really wanting is the experience of beauty …
and this feel good experience needs to become our compass in order to achieve health.
And herein lies the trouble with comparisons … and why they simply don’t work.
When we see someone and wish we were them, we are no longer grounded in who we are.
When we see another’s traits as being superior to ours, we discard how we feel and rest in idolatry.
When we see beauty as the destination … we become disconnected from what it really is:
the compass that lets us know we are on the right path.
Simply put … when we are taking care of our health, we have a feel good experience.
our skin glows
our digestive system cooperates
we’re light on our feet
we regain physical, mental, and spiritual balance
we eat when we’re hungry and stop when we’re full
we have energy for the relationships in our life
our sleep is restful and restorative
And anyone who tries to make you believe otherwise is trying to sell you a destination that doesn’t exist.
It is our job to protect our health by using our feel good experiences to guide us along the way.
